What makes Red Owl Yoga different?

Red Owl Yoga is dedicated to providing accessible, affordable and fun classes in downtown Edmonton. Because of our unique business model (no physical studio space), we can bring yoga to where it’s needed. We believe in building community, and in giving back.

I’m new to yoga. What do I need to know before coming to class?

First of all, welcome and congratulations on taking a step towards well-being! You don’t need to be physically fit or already flexible to do yoga. Come as you are and let the practice take care of the rest.

All of Red Owl Yoga’s classes are accessible to all levels of practitioner, from beginners to more advanced, unless otherwise noted on the schedule. That said, you may benefit from attending our Beginners class and learning some of the foundations of yoga before trying other classes.

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move easily. Bring a yoga mat (a thin, non-slip rubber mat) or borrow one of ours. Please arrive a few minutes early and let your instructor know that you are new to yoga. Modifications and adjustments (including hands-on guidance if appropriate) may be offered to help you access the benefits of the poses.

Remember that yoga is a personal practice so there’s no need to compare yourself to the person on the mat next to yours. Every body will look different in every pose, and the internal experience is what matters. As Eileen says, “If you’re feeling it, you’re doing it!” Respect your body’s signals and take a break when you need it.

Each yoga class ends with a few minutes in silent relaxation, lying still with eyes closed. Your instructor will let you know when it’s time to come back. After class, feel free to ask your instructor any questions.

Do I need to register for classes in advance?

As of January 2014, advance registration is no longer required. All classes will be offered on an ongoing, drop-in basis. Click here for pricing and payment information.

How can I pay for class and/or purchase passes?

You can purchase multi-class passes or pay a drop-in rate to your instructor before class begins. We accept cash or cheques. E-transfers can also be sent to eileenchan23@gmail.com.

Where are classes held?

Unless otherwise noted on the website, all classes are held in the Shoctor Lobby of the Citadel Theatre (9828 101A Avenue), on the second level above Normand’s Restaurant. For information on how to get there and where to park, click here.

Is there a place for me to get changed and store personal belongings while I practice?

There are washrooms at the Citadel that can be used as a changeroom before and after class. Lockers are not available but feel free to bring your personal belongings with you to class.

What kind of training do your instructors have?

Red Owl Yoga’s instructors have trained all over the world with acclaimed schools such as the Nosara Institute and Gaiatri Yoga Teacher Training, and we continue to update our skills on an ongoing basis. All of our yoga educators have completed a minimum of 200 hours of teacher training.

Can I do yoga while pregnant?

Yoga is generally seen as beneficial during pregnancy, promoting relaxation, stress reduction, strength and flexibility. However, some yoga poses are contraindicated during pregnancy, especially if you are new to yoga. If you are pregnant, please let your instructor know before class so that modifications can be provided to suit your needs. Individual situations will vary, so always check with your healthcare practitioner before starting yoga or any other physical activity.
